GARRY PEREIRA
It’s 4.15am and I am heading out to sea on a trawler
off the North Norfolk coast. The shipping forecast
from the previous night warns of ‘Moderate to Good’
becoming Cyclonic later in Thames.
It was a school project over 30 years ago that fuelled
these paintings, learning of Turner, tying himself
to a mast of a boat to make his masterpieces. I now
understand why.
These paintings are collaborative pieces, part made by
the sea, the tide pushing the brush around the surface
of the canvas, the splash of sea water pulling the oil
towards the swirl. Becoming cyclonic later in Thames, oil and seawater on panel, 90 x 90 cm
The process excites me, its better than standing at the
easel in a studio. Yes it’s romantic, but also real, the
results hopefully ‘Moderate to Good’.
