‘ I just capture a moment of intense happiness to be alive’ Elie Lambert
The Osborne Studio Gallery is again delighted to be showing a third One Man Show of the remarkable Elie Lambert. His life has been anything but dull. In his time he has been a ‘gentleman rider’, a journalist reporting on Racing in both French and English journals, an Antique and Fine Art Dealer and of course an Artist. I believe this last mentioned vocation has been by far the most important in his illustrious career and, when combined with the beauty of the horse, of which he has an in-depth and lifelong knowledge, creates a magic pairing. Sir Peter O’Sullevan, our much missed former Chairman was a very fine judge not least of Art; he found Elie’s work ‘compulsive’.
The artists who have influenced his work are interesting in their variety from the more traditional iconic Sir Alfred Munnings to David Hockney and Jack Butler Yeats. His greatest influence, however, is as he says ‘a chap called Picasso’. There is, also, of course L S Lowry and to many Elie is known as the Lowry of the Racing World. His colour palette is a reaction to the dark yellow and brown paintings of the Flemish school. His bright vibrant colours capture the pure joy of being alive, something very poignant to us in recent times. Like all our lives in the past year and a half, Elie’s has also been curtailed. He is, however, conscious of how lucky he is to live next to the racecourse and stables in Deauville, where he continues to be inspired with ever varied material. Lambert’s work speaks for itself. A great collector of Art often said that you don’t need to know about art, you just need to ‘open your eyes’ and the work of Elie Lambert is well worth opening your eyes for!
