Chronology
1948 Born at 28 Lensfield Road, Cambridge,
opposite the Scott Polar Research Institute
1966 Entered the University of Manchester to
read Mechanical Engineering
1971 Graduated from Manchester with a degree
in the History of Art
1972-89 Curator of Art and Keeper at Portsmouth City Museum
and Art Gallery, Wakefield City Art Gallery, the Mappin
Art Gallery, Sheffield and Director of the Yorkshire
Contemporary Art Group, Leeds
Early 1990s Began drawing in the landscape
1992-2013 University Curator, University of Birmingham
1992-2022 Published a number of books and exhibition catalogues
on aspects of 18th, 19th and 20th century art and science,
including biographies of Turner, Faraday, Gainsborough
and Constable.
2004 Given a paint box and encouragement by his wife, Kate Eustace
2005 Visited Corsica where he was blown over by the richness and
vibrancy of the colours in the island’s landscape and, for the first
time, went seriously to work with the paint box.
2022 Held his first exhibition at the Osborne Studio Gallery.
