I first came across Marcus Hodge when he was chosen by Robin Badham-Thornhill, the Head Master of Summer Fields, where I was a Governor, to paint his portrait for the school. I was very struck by his style, capturing the essence of the man and indeed was particularly taken with his freely drawn charcoal that he threw in alongside the formal oil.
Sadly I wasn't in the market for a portrait at the time! My loss.
Fast forward a few years, and out of the blue (to me) was the first of Marcus' Osborne Studio Gallery exhibitions, a riot of colour, uninhibited brush strokes and confidence in his own skin. Followed by his more figurative exhibitions with flowers, horses and other animals from the Indian sub-continent all with the same marvellous use of colour and freedom.
It seemed obvious to me that the British Sporting Art Trust needed a commission from such a trail blazer of our time, which is how we have ended up with the marvellous picture, 'Polo, Then & Now'. We are delighted and I am much looking forward to seeing Marcus' latest body of work in the flesh.
