Wiltshire artist Philip Shaw is celebrated for his detailed wildlife works and simple characteristic portraits of children.
Philip owes much of the inspiration for his wildlife painting having spent 10 years working in Africa, including Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan. His journey starting out in the Chyulu Hills where Hemingway wrote the ‘Green Hills of Africa’ and where Philip first learned to track wild animals with the Maasai. He returned to the UK where he co-founded Savernake Knives the British manufacturing company.
Having always doodled and painted Philip’s career spans book illustrations reminiscent of EH Shepard and commissions through his Tall Chin Illustrations.
Philip lives in Wiltshire with his wife, the artist Georgie Weedon, and their daughters, he draws inspiration from his family, the English countryside and his rich African experiences, infusing his work with warmth, nostalgia, and a sense of adventure.
“Simply beautiful work! It feels to me like Philip is catching up rapidly with a self that was supposed to be painting but didn’t for years. I can only imagine how much he is enjoying it and what beautiful results! Well done! It will only carry him along more powerfully as he continues with the work, and I know he is putting lots of that in! An inspiration to see this new body of work by Philip and I’m excited to see what the future holds!"
